Playing the part of Gloria was a huge departure and a very important role for Natascha McElhone.

“I was absolutely delighted to be working on a British movie being made in Britain, but also I felt strongly that this was a story that had to be told. Gloria was not equipped to have children. Indeed in a BBC documentary that was made about Kevin’s life when his book came out she said how she just wished she hadn’t had six children. Obviously it’s very hard to make Gloria a sympathetic character in any way, but I felt I at least had to try not to play her as a stereotyped monster. In Gloria’s case there was just no help available, and yes I do think there is a possibility that even she could have been helped, if only perhaps, in not having so many children. The way the Lewis family lived is part of a pattern. Somehow or other we need to break the cycle.’

Natascha McElhone starred in her first film SURVIVING PICASSO opposite Anthony Hopkins in 1995. There followed THE TRUMAN SHOW with Jim Carrey, THE DEVIL'S OWN with Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford, and RONIN with Robert De Niro. She played Rosalind to Kenneth Branagh's Berowne in his musical version of LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST. In 2003, McElhone co-starred with George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh's futuristic love story, SOLARIS. She has re-teamed with her THE KID co-stars Ioan Gruffudd and Augustus Prew in THE SECRET OF MOONACRE MANOR and has recently shot the second season of the Golden Globe-winning TV series CALIFORNICATION, in which she co-stars with David Duchovny. She also recently starred in TNT's mini-series THE COMPANY, a Golden Globe-nominated drama.

Other major film credits include CITY OF GHOSTS with Matt Dillon and Gerard Depardieu, LAUREL CANYON with Christian Bale and Francis McDormand, and LADIES IN LAVENDER, with Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. McElhone's early stage credits include starring roles in productions of RICHARD III, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, THE CHERRY ORCHARD and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM.
